Pyrolysis of biomass can produces Bio-oil as well as charcoal holding the same amount of elemental carbon. This is a potential which is an alternative renewable feedstock for petrochemicals.

The biomass currently being harvested suitable for pyrolysis would yield only a fraction of the amount of hydrocarbon fuel currently consumed.
